Money line on your palm: where palmists look and why

The old palmistry books we checked have no line called the money line. See which lines modern readers mean by it and what each one is said to show.

By Editorial teamUpdated

None of the older books we checked has a line called the money line.

The money line on your palm is a modern name, and different sites use it for different lines. So rather than pick one and assert it, here are the three things people mean, so you can see which of them your hand has.

Which money line are we talking about?
A palm with one blue line that moves between three places, depending on which meaning of money line you choose.

The one most money line pages mean

InstaAstro puts it "below the little finger (pinky) or around the Mount of Mercury". Centre of Excellence calls the same area the Mercury line or business line, tied to commerce.

InstaAstro and Centre of Excellence, both modern pages, neither citing a source

Which can you see on your own hand?

None so far. Nothing follows from that: InstaAstro itself says a missing line "does not necessarily indicate financial difficulty", then contradicts itself further down the page.

Scan your hand to see your main lines traced. The scan doesn't read wealth, because nothing can.

We read Cheiro's Palmistry for All (1916), Dale's Indian Palmistry (1895), Williams's Key to Palmistry (1902) and Markun's survey of 1927 in full, and none of them lists a money line by that name. That doesn't prove no old book anywhere has one. It does suggest the term came later, and it explains why the pages using it can't agree on what it is.

Three things people mean, and a fourth

This is where the search leads if you follow it: three modern pages, then the older books. Each is sure of itself, and no two agree.

InstaAstro
Where the page puts it"Below the little finger (pinky) or around the Mount of Mercury", "often a vertical line"
What the page saysReads it for finances. On a missing line it says both that it "does not necessarily indicate financial difficulty" and that it "suggests potential financial struggles"
Centre of Excellence
Where the page puts itThree lines at once: the fate line, the sun line, and a Mercury or business line under the little finger
What the page saysThe fate line "plays a crucial role in determining financial success", and a triangle of all three is a strong sign
Onmanorama, 2019
Where the page puts itA line that "starts from below the index finger"
What the page saysHeadline: "Trace this line on your palm to know if you can ever be rich"
Cheiro, Markun
Where the page puts itNo money line. The sun line, towards the ring finger, comes closest
What the page says"Recognition, reward, riches, and honours" (Cheiro). "Worldly, especially financial, success" (Markun)

Under the little finger, under the index finger, up the ring finger and up the middle: four addresses for one name. If you look for your money line and can't find it, the likely reason is that you were sent to the wrong place, and there's no right place.

What the old books did say about money

Plenty. They just didn't give it a line of its own. Cheiro ties riches to the sun line and, for a fate line sending a branch towards the ring finger, "riches and public life". He also has a fine observation about the ring finger: when it's as long as the middle finger, "the love of amassing wealth will be the dominant passion". Dale doesn't use a line at all. She divides the palm into regions and calls one of them "the commercial region or the wealth generally of the person".

Markun, who was enjoying himself in 1927, reports the rules with a straight face and then lets them fall over. Of the line of Apollo: "A forked line means that money comes in from two or more sources. But if the junction is not very distinct, we are told that the subject has too many interests." "A doubling of the line is supposed to show an increase in wealth." Its absence "may show simply that the subject is careless with small sums of money". And there's a rising line from the life line to the middle finger: "A line going up to Mount Saturn indicates that the subject will deposit money in the bank or buy lottery tickets or put a coin in a slot." "This," he says, "is always a financial line." It's the nearest thing we found in an old book to a money line, and it's a joke.

The money triangle

Search for the money line and you soon meet its companion. We could verify that modern pages describe it, and that they don't agree on what it is. InstaAstro says it's formed where the "Mercury line, fate line and the head line intersect". Centre of Excellence says it's "formed by three intersecting lines", usually fate, sun and Mercury. Neither cites a source.

The old books do have a triangle, and it isn't about money. Cheiro's Great Triangle is made by the head, life and health lines, and he reads it for health and breadth of view. Dale's version, on the same part of the palm, is read for "prudence, manly wit and fair fortune". Markun's sources take a large one to indicate "generosity and a broad mind". So until someone shows us an older text, we'd call "money triangle" a modern internet term built on an old shape.

What to do with this

Palm lines don't show wealth. We could find no study comparing any palm line with anyone's income, and the claims contradict each other too often to all be true. Money questions deserve a budget and, when they're serious, someone qualified to look at them. A palm can't tell you whether to take the job or make the investment.

The idea can still be a good way into a useful conversation with yourself.

  • What do you actually want money to do for you? Security, time, freedom, a particular thing?
  • Markun's fork is "money comes in from two or more sources". Do you want that, or do you want one good one?
  • When did you last feel you had enough? What was different then?

The money chapter starts from the line that decides

The old books we checked give the money line no chapter, so the Complete Palm Reading goes to your head line and your fingers, and reads how you decide about money.

Questions people ask

Which line on the palm is the money line?
There's no agreed answer. The older books we checked have no line by that name. Modern pages use it for a line under the little finger, for the sun line towards the ring finger, or for the fate line, and at least one starts it under the index finger.
Where is the money line?
On most modern money line pages, under the little finger on the mount of Mercury. If you're reading a page about the sun or fate line under the same name, it's towards the ring finger or up the middle of the palm.
What does it mean if I don't have a money line?
Nothing about your finances. You can't lack something that has no fixed definition, and one site we read gives two opposite answers on the same page: that a missing line is nothing to worry about and that it suggests money struggles.
What is a money triangle?
A shape that modern pages describe, formed where three lines meet. They don't agree which three. InstaAstro uses head, fate and Mercury lines, and Centre of Excellence uses fate, sun and Mercury. The older books we checked have a Great Triangle, read for other things. It looks to us like a modern internet term.
Do palm lines show wealth?
No good evidence says so. No study we could find has compared any palm line with income or wealth. The claims are old and they're charming, and they aren't information you should act on.
Is the money line the same as the fate or sun line?
On some pages, yes. Others treat them as separate lines. That's why this page shows all three instead of picking one.
