How rare is the M on your palm?
How rare is an M on your palm? We looked for a real count of how many people have one. See what we found, what the lore says and how to check your hand.
As far as we can find, nobody has counted.
That's our honest answer to how rare the M on your palm is. We went looking for a real figure: palm crease surveys, medical papers and every number floating around online. What we found is below, so you can see the search for yourself.
If you've spotted an M on your palm and wondered how rare it is, you've probably already seen numbers. They're all over the internet, they disagree by a factor of ten, and not one of the pages we opened says where its figure came from. So we're not giving you a percentage. Bustle's 2015 article, one of the better known, says "supposedly rare" and stops there, which is closer to the truth than the pages that sound precise.
Here's what can be said: which studies looked at palm creases and what they count, how the letter forms, what the lore claims and what the Bible really says. There's also a check you can run on your own hand.
What we checked
The search is the content here. We wanted a study that sampled hands and counted M shapes. This is what turned up.
| Where | What it counts or says | An M figure? |
|---|---|---|
| Belay et al., 2022 | 1,664 palms of Ethiopian students, sorted as normal, simian, Sydney or Suwon | No M category |
| Ranjit et al., 2019 | 252 people in Kathmandu, sorted as normal, simian or Sydney, and separately as open, closed or meeting | No M category |
| Park et al., 2010 | 3,216 volunteers in Korea, with a careful classification of palm creases | Doesn't mention an M |
| Bustle, 2015 | Quotes a palmistry author on the M. "Supposedly rare" | No number |
| El Cronista, 2024 | Reads the M as leadership and intuition, and adds that lines are "simplemente pliegues en la piel", simply folds in the skin | No number |
| Assorted web pages | Give percentages, and some of them admit data is hard to find | Yes, with no source. We won't repeat them |
If someone can show us a real count, we'll put it here with the date.
How the M forms
It's worth seeing how little you need to get the letter. Bustle's source says "when these lines are in alignment the letter M should be visible", and names the heart, head and life lines. Our drawing uses a fourth, the fate line, because it closes the middle of the letter. Here it is one stroke at a time.
Now the reasoning, and this part is ours. Three of those four strokes are the three principal lines most hands have. In the Kathmandu survey, 76.6% of people had the "closed" type and 5.7% "meeting", which on Park's definitions means the life and head creases join, as they do at the top right of the letter. And the fate line varies a lot from hand to hand. So the strokes are common and the uncommon thing, if anything, is a clear middle stroke, along with a person looking at their hand in the right mood. That's a guess at why the M feels both special and everywhere, and it's no substitute for a count. Skeptics quoted by Bustle claim everyone has one and "they are just too faint to see clearly". They haven't counted either.
Check yours
What counts as an M is a judgment call, so we built the check that way. It draws what you say you see and tells you nothing you didn't tell it.
Look at your open hand and switch on what you can see. There's no rulebook here, so go by your own eye.
Three of four strokes. Whether this counts is up to you. Bustle's source names only the heart, head and life lines, so plenty of people would say yes.
What counts as an M is a judgment call. No study defines it, so nor do we. This tool says only what you told it.
Our scan labels an M only when it also has a fate line it's fairly sure of, which isn't often. So a hand it doesn't label may still read as an M to you, and that says more about the scan than your hand.

What the lore says
The most specific version we could trace comes through Bustle, citing Jon Saint-Germain, author of Karmic Palmistry. People with the M are "considered extremely intuitive" and "excellent judges of character", who "can supposedly see through lies and deceit better than most". It goes on to careers, with "you will excel in whatever career path you choose". El Cronista, writing for Spanish-speaking readers in 2024, reads it as "un claro símbolo de liderazgo", a clear symbol of leadership, with good intuition and decision making.
Then there's which hand. Saint-Germain's version, per Bustle, is that it "should be on your non-dominant hand to come with all these lucky traits", and on your writing hand "that's bad luck". We're reporting that, and we don't hold it. The article's own writer, by the way, says she has a clear M on the hand she writes with. Other recent pages in our search skip luck and hand out careers instead, practical work on the right and talking work on the left, citing nobody. On both hands, some call it especially strong. If you've read that yours is on the "wrong" hand, there's no evidence for a wrong hand.
Notice how the traits themselves work. Intuitive, a good judge of character, hard to fool: nearly everyone would agree that describes them. Psychologist Bertram Forer showed this in 1949, when he gave 39 students the same description, assembled from a newsstand astrology book, and they rated it about 4.3 out of 5 for accuracy. So if the M's reading rang true, that's a very human thing to happen, and it doesn't show anything about the letter. Nobody has tested whether people with an M can spot a liar.
The biblical meaning of an M on the palm
People search for this often, and hardly anyone answers it. The Bible doesn't mention an M on the palm. Three verses are connected with hands in this tradition, and we'll quote them as they stand in the King James Version, so you can read them for yourself.
- Job 37:7
- The verse"He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work."
- How it comes into palmistryOld palmistry books quote this one most. Markun calls it "one of the Biblical texts which were supposed to justify chiromancy", and Dale offers it as proof that "Job believed in this science".
- Proverbs 3:16
- The verse"Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour."
- How it comes into palmistryThe right and left hands appear, so it gets drawn into talk of which hand means what. It doesn't mention lines.
- Isaiah 49:16
- The verse"Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me."
- How it comes into palmistryThe one verse about something written on palms. It isn't about your palm, and no letter is named.
What any of these means is a question for your own faith and those who teach it, and we won't tell you what God intends. All we can report is what's on the page: none of the three mentions an M, or any letter on a hand.
What to do with it
Enjoy it. You've noticed something on your own body that's pleasing and a little strange, and that's a nice thing to have a story about. Just hold the story loosely. Don't let an M on your writing hand worry you, and don't let one on the other hand make any decisions. Our guide to what your palm lines say about you takes the same line, and rare palm lines sorts the marks with real numbers from those with only a reputation.
To see your own lines on a photo, the palm scanner traces them, and the tracer lets you place the fate line yourself, since that's the stroke cameras find hardest. The palm lines overview has them all on one map.

Questions people ask
- How rare is the M on your palm?
- Nobody knows. We looked for a count and found none. Palm crease surveys sort hands into other categories and don't report an M. Percentages circulate online without any source behind them, so we won't repeat them.
- Do most people have an M on their palm?
- Many people have most of the strokes, because the M is built from common lines. Some skeptics quoted by Bustle go further and say everyone has one, too faint to see. Without a study we can't say what share would count.
- What does an M on your palm mean?
- In popular lore it means intuition, leadership and a good sense for people. Those claims trace back mostly to a modern palmistry book and to viral articles. There's no study behind any of them. Physically it's four creases that happen to meet in the shape of a letter.
- What does it mean if the M is on both hands, or only one?
- Writers on the lore treat the hands differently. Jon Saint-Germain, as reported by Bustle, says it's lucky on the non-dominant hand and not on the writing hand. Other recent pages assign careers instead. None shows evidence, so read it as a story, whichever hand yours is on.
- What is the biblical meaning of an M on the palm?
- The Bible doesn't mention an M on the palm. The verses connected with hands in this tradition are Job 37:7, Proverbs 3:16 and Isaiah 49:16, and none of them refers to a letter.
- Which lines make the M?
- The heart, head and life lines in most accounts, with the fate line closing the middle. Up the heart line, down the fate line to the head line, up the head line to the edge above the thumb, and down the life line.
- Is an M on the palm good luck or bad luck?
- Neither, as far as anyone has shown. You'll see it called both, depending on the hand. If you enjoy thinking of it as a good sign, that does no harm, and it isn't information about your luck.
- Does it mean you can read people, as the articles say?
- No test has found that. It's also a flattering description almost anyone would recognize: in Forer's classic 1949 demonstration, students rated one identical description about 4.3 out of 5 for accuracy.
