The love line on your palm is the heart line by another name.
It is the crease that runs across the top of your palm under the fingers. Older books call it the line of heart, or the line of affections, and "love line" is what most people type when they search. Palm reading for love also looks at two other places on the hand. None of the three can tell you who you'll meet or whether it will last, and we will come back to that plainly.
The three things palm reading for love looks at
- aHeart line, the love line
- bMarriage lines
- cMount of Venus
The heart line. This is where most of it happens. Cheiro wrote that it "relates purely to the affectionate disposition". Notice that word: disposition, how you tend to love, and not what is going to happen to you. A modern palmistry site reads an upward curve as idealist, a straight line ending between the middle and index fingers as balancing emotion and reason, and an ending under the middle finger as more self-focused. Every shape has its own reading on our heart line page.
The marriage lines. These are the short lines on the outer edge of your palm, under the little finger. Cheiro says, "Only the clearly formed lines relate to marriage, the short ones to deep affection", and Markun, surveying the books a decade later, says the lines "appear to be somewhat uncertain" and that recent palmists had started calling them influence lines. So even within the tradition, a line that was once a marriage count became a mark of people who mattered. The marriage line page goes through what the old books disagreed about.
The mount of Venus. The pad at the base of your thumb, read for warmth and for the desire for company. Markun's books say a good mount "gives the reading of affection". It is the least specific of the three, and also the part of your hand you can check by pressing it. Our page on the mounts of the hand explains how.
Read these together, and don't lean on any one. All three of them are on the palm reading lines map if you want to see where they fit with everything else.
Can palm reading predict love?
No. Plainly and kindly: there is nothing on your hand that knows who you are going to meet, whether someone will come back, or whether this person is the one. No study we know of has even tried to test that. The one palmistry claim that researchers have put to a real test, about the life line, failed in two of three studies. Love readings have never been tested.
| The old claim | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| "a constant and romantic love", if the line runs up to the index finger | Markun reports this, then adds: "Thus tell the chiromancers their tale." He didn't believe it either. |
| The heart line shows the "affectionate disposition" | A claim about temperament. It doesn't say what happens next, and it has never been tested. |
| Partners with very different heart line lengths give unevenly | A modern reading, offered as "not a moral judgment", with no studies behind it. It can start a good conversation. |
What about soulmates?
There is no soulmate line. The word doesn't appear in the old books we read, and a hand can't describe another person's face or location. We don't sell a drawing of one either.
Do I read the left or right hand for love?
Books differ. Cheiro compares both: the left for what you started with, the right for what you have made of it. Applied to love, that gives you a pleasant question: how does the way you love now differ from the way you started out? Some modern sites say to read a woman's right hand for marriage in particular, while telling you elsewhere in the same article to read her left. We set out those arguments on the left or right page. Nothing about love readings depends on your gender or your partner's.

How to use your love line as a conversation
Here is where a reading earns its keep. A line gives you an odd, low-pressure way into a conversation you might not otherwise have, on your own or with someone.
On your own
- When did you last show someone you cared before they showed you?
- What do you do with a feeling you don't want anyone to see?
- Who would be surprised to learn how much you think about them?
With someone
- Hold your palms side by side. Whose heart line runs further across? Now: who says it first in this house?
- Which of you needs more time before talking about something that hurt?
- What is one thing you do for each other that the other may not have noticed?
To try this with someone next to you, the palm compatibility tool scans both of your hands on one phone and overlays the lines. It describes how they differ, and it doesn't tell you whether to stay together.
What a paid reading on love would add
The free reading from the palm reading scanner gives you your lines traced, your hand type and one line read in full, and if you tell it love is your question, it starts with the heart line where it can. The Complete Palm Reading described on our pricing page is meant to go further into love, money, work and choices, written from your photo and your measured lines. It works the same way as everything here: tradition and reflection, not a forecast.

Questions people ask
- Which line on the palm is the love line?
- The heart line. It runs across the top of the palm under the fingers, from the little-finger edge towards the index or middle finger. 'Love line' is a popular name for it, and older books say line of heart.
- Is the love line the same as the heart line?
- Yes. They are two names for one crease. The marriage lines, on the edge of the palm under the little finger, are a separate thing that people sometimes mix up with it.
- What does my love line say about my love life?
- In palmistry, it speaks to how you tend to love: whether you lead with feeling, weigh things up, or look after yourself first. It is a tradition's reading of temperament. It says nothing reliable about who you will meet or what will happen.
- Can a palm reader tell if I'll find love?
- No. No good evidence shows that palm lines predict events, and that includes love. Be careful with anyone who says they can see or change your love future for a fee.
- What do two marriage lines mean?
- Old books read clear lines on the palm's edge as marriages and shorter ones as deep affection, and even their authors disagreed. Later palmists softened them to influence lines. It isn't a count of anything real.
- Does the love line change over time?
- The main palm lines vary little over time, according to research on palm images. Palmists tell stories about lines changing, but no study shows they follow changes in your love life.
